Will My Sofa or Bed Fit Through the Door? Measuring Guide

All furniture buying guides

Check both the assembled furniture footprint and the largest delivery component before ordering. A sofa or bed can fit your room but still be too large for a doorway, stair turn or lift. Send Stratus Interiors your access measurements and chosen product so we can help you check the route.

What measurements do I need before buying furniture?

Record the full assembled width, depth and height, then ask for the dimensions of the largest delivery section or packaged component. For beds, include the headboard and footboard; for sofas, include the arms and any fixed chaise. Do not use mattress size or seat width as a substitute for the furniture’s outside dimensions.

How do I measure a doorway?

Measure the clear opening available with the door open, from the frame to the nearest obstruction. Check opening height and the space on both sides where the item must turn. Include porch doors, shared entrances and the bedroom or living-room doorway. Photograph awkward angles and note handles, radiators and low ceilings.

What should I measure on stairs and in lifts?

Measure the narrowest stair width, overhead clearance and the available space on each landing. A turn at the top can be the limiting point. For a lift, check the door opening and internal width, depth and height, as well as building rules and booking requirements. Tell us which floor the furniture needs to reach.

Can the sofa or bed be taken apart?

This depends on the design. Ask whether the selected model arrives in sections and whether feet, arms or headboards are removable. Confirm the dimensions after any permitted removal. Never assume furniture can be dismantled further than the supplier specifies or that sectional construction guarantees access.

How do I check that furniture fits the room?

Mark its complete footprint with masking tape and test doors, drawers and walking routes. Allow space for sofa-bed extension, recliner movement and storage opening where relevant. Use your actual layout and mobility needs when choosing clearance.

Is room delivery or assembly included?

Standard delivery, delivery upstairs and assembly are different services. Check the current delivery policy and agree any additional service before ordering. Some products have their own fitting offer; confirm the terms for your chosen item and postcode.
