Choose your mattress size first, then check the complete bed frame dimensions. UK size names describe the mattress; upholstered rails, headboards and footboards can make the bed substantially larger. Measure the room and delivery route before you choose.

What are the standard UK mattress sizes?

These are standard UK mattress dimensions, not guaranteed outside frame measurements. Check the exact specification of the selected mattress and bed, particularly for bespoke or imported designs.

What is the difference between a double and a king bed?

A standard UK king mattress is 15cm wider and 10cm longer than a double. Compare the complete frame footprints as well: a chunky double bed can occupy more floor space than a slim king frame. Check the selected design rather than comparing size names alone.

Will my existing mattress fit a new bed frame?

Measure its actual width, length and depth and compare them with the new frame’s supported mattress specification. Ask about any depth or weight limits for storage mechanisms or other moving parts. Do not force a mattress into a smaller frame or assume UK and European size names are interchangeable.

How much space should I leave around a bed?

Allow enough room to walk, make the bed and open doors, wardrobes and drawers. Tape out the frame’s full footprint, including headboard wings and footboard projection. There is no single clearance that suits every room: account for who uses it and their access needs.

How do I measure an extra-wide or tall headboard?

Check the complete headboard width and floor-to-top height separately from the mattress size. Include bedside tables, sockets, skirting boards and sloping ceilings. Request delivery-component measurements because a headboard that fits the wall may not fit the stairs.

Are round beds measured the same way?

No. A round mattress is measured across its diameter. A 72-inch circular sleeping surface is approximately 183cm across, but its shape differs from a rectangular super king mattress. Check the full upholstered footprint and compatible bedding separately.
